Madara sought to seek an equally powerful Uzumaki clan member to wield the Rinnegan because the last Uchihas living at the time were Sasuke and Itachi. Without the boy’s knowledge, he implanted his Rinnegan into him, intending for Nagato to one day utilize the eyes to bring Madara back to life.
The Uchiha clan were only able to maintain one Rinnegan because they don’t have as high life forces as the Uzumaki or high chakra reserves as the Senju clan, Which is why Obito only implanted one Rinnegan into his eyes because he couldn’t handle both of them at the same time.
Madara didn’t actually give it to Nagato. When Nagato was young, Madara transplanted the Rinnegan onto Nagato, without his knowledge. Madara had achieved the Rinnegan near to end of his physical life. So he decided that would have to die someday as his body was nearing the end.
In the final moments of the battle, Madara bite off a small chunk of Hashirama’s flesh and swallowed it. When he was revived by the power of Izanagi he then threw up the piece he had swallowed. Then mixed Hashirama’s DNA with his own. And years later he was somehow able to awaken the Rinnegan.
How Did Madara Give Nagato The Rinnegan? Madara gave Nagato the Rinnegan through unknown means. The technique was never specified, but Madara gave Nagato the Rinnegan as a child. Growing up in the remote Hidden Rain Village, Nagato made the perfect vessel to safely carry the eyes until Madara could become reanimated.
