D. Most food allergies start in childhood, but they can develop at any time of life. It is not clear why, but some adults develop an allergy to a food they typically eat with no problem. Sometimes a child outgrows a food allergy, but that’s less likely to happen with adults.
Oral Allergy Syndrome or OAS is also called pollen-food allergy syndrome. This syndrome is due to a “food allergy” caused by uncooked fruits, raw vegetables, spices and nuts. It is not an actual food allergy, but instead a reaction to certain foods that can develop in people with allergies to pollen.
Fruits. A great variety of different fruits have been reported as causing allergic reactions, however, the most prevalent and best described are reactions to apple, peach and kiwi fruit.
Diagnosing A Fruit Allergy A skin prick test can identify over 40 allergens. Your doctor will test your skin to see if it reacts to pollen and latex, the common causes of a fruit allergy. If results are negative, you may need to do an oral food challenge during your office visit.
Even a tiny amount of the allergy-causing food can trigger signs and symptoms such as digestive problems, hives or swollen airways. In some people, a food allergy can cause severe symptoms or even a life-threatening reaction known as anaphylaxis.
Some people experience itchiness in their mouth and throat, sometimes with mild swelling, immediately after eating fresh fruit or vegetables. This is known as oral allergy syndrome. Oral allergy syndrome is caused by allergy antibodies mistaking certain proteins in fresh fruits, nuts or vegetables for pollen.
Because food allergies can develop suddenly, you need to take symptoms like facial swelling, hives, and dizziness seriously. This is especially true if those reactions occur when you’re eating foods that commonly trigger allergies such as shellfish, milk, peanuts, and tree nuts.
They may take a few hours to a few days to disappear. If the exposure to the allergen continues, such as during a spring pollen season, allergic reactions may last for longer periods such as a few weeks to months. Even with adequate treatment, some allergic reactions may take two to four weeks to go away.
Food intolerances affect your digestive system. People who suffer from an intolerance, or sensitivity, can’t break down certain foods. They develop gas, diarrhea and other problems.
Why does this happen? It isn’t exactly clear why allergies might develop in adulthood. Researchers believe that a severe allergic reaction during childhood , even a single episode of symptoms, can increase your likelihood of developing allergies as an adult when you’re re-exposed to that allergen at higher levels.
