Death. While Sophia is trying to find her way back to the group, she is attacked and bitten on the left shoulder by a walker and either dies of the infection or blood loss. Eventually, a zombified Sophia is found by Otis and is put into Hershel’s barn.
For this to be true, Sophia has to be bitten almost immediately after Rick leaves her. She then has to wander near Otis to be found, and then captured and put in the barn. Based on the tracks Daryl followed, she was heading back to the road, then changed direction.
Hershel’s barn is full of walkers because he chooses to catch them and place them there- rather than kill him. Hershel, in reality, is a very religious and sensitive man and could not bear the thought of killing things that had once been human- many of those whom he had known when they were alive and not dead.
Day 64+, Rick and the group narrowly escape CDC moments before the building explodes. The group drives off (minus Jacqui). Season 1 takes place over the course of 5 days. Day 66+, two days after the CDC explosion Sophia goes missing.
Post-Apocalypse The survivors spend the first half of the season at the farm using it as a base of operations to find Sophia but after the barn massacre, Hershel wants Rick Grimes’ group to leave since they do not respect his rules. The survivors make a stand at the farm but quickly realize that the farm is lost.
Hershel’s Farm & The Prison Hershel’s Farm is just outside the town of Senoia on an unmarked road. The prison, as opposed to random internet rumors claiming it was filmed at an actual prison, is actually located at Raleigh Studios Atlanta. And because they want to keep everything under wraps, access is prohibited.
To create Hershel’s “amputated” leg, the visual effects department has Scott Wilson wear a green sock. Wilson said acting like you don’t have a leg gives you “muscles in places you didn’t used to have.”. The Tattoos on Daryl’s back are indeed real.
